We all wish we had more control.
When our relationships are strained, when our bodies refuse to cooperate, when the future is uncertain, control promises security and peace. If only I were in charge, we dream.
The problem is, the more we seek the illusion of control, the more it betrays us. In place of certainty, it gives us anxiety. In place of predictability, it creates complexity. And in place of unity, it divides.
In this eye-opening book, Sharon Hodde Miller helps us discover
● the psychology and theology behind why we control
● the primary tools of how we control
● the fallout of control and what it costs us
● the solution: the real power God promises us
The answer to our craving is not simply to “let go and let God.” Instead, God has given us real power in Christ–to exercise influence over ourselves and our lives.

    Must read!
The Cost of Control Why We Crave It, The Anxiety it Gives Us, and the Real Power God Promises is the first book I have read by Sharon Hodde Miller, but it won’t be the last. I checked it out of the library, but by the end of the second chapter it was one I knew I needed to own. What Satan did not want them to know (Adam & Eve) and is still deceiving us with today is the more we seek control, the less control we feel.In a world that constantly seems to be spinning out of control, I could not have picked a better book to start reading at the beginning of this year. If you can’t tell by all the tabs sticking out of it, I loved this book and learned so much. In fact, I ordered my own copy so I could mark it and keep it.Freedom, knowledge, and choice are all good things, given to us by God. But when we possess an overabundance of them, it gives us a false sense of our own control. We don’t always link these two factors together but understanding the relationship between anxiety and control explains a lot about what we are seeing and experiencing. This book has four sections. The first is why we control, the second is how we control, the third is what it costs us, and the fourth section is the real power God promises.Sharon Hodde Miller has packed a lot of truth and nuggets of wisdom into this small book. She covers a wide variety of topics under the umbrella of control. She has chapters on power, money, theology, shame, burnout and so much more. There is no way to do a book like this justice. I loved it. I know it will not be for everyone, but it is exactly what I needed for the beginning of this year.

    Control is a God category!
I LOVE THIS BOOK! I’m facilitating a Bible Study in my home with this book and it is such a word in due season for me and for the world I would say! We are all stressed out because we are trying to control everything in a chaotic world and control is a God category! We are not God so no wonder we are stressed out!

    Profoundly life-changing
I’ve struggled with control from childhood. This book helped me realign my thoughts on control and helped me understand fully the ways we try to control and what it does to us.

Control: We think we have but do not.
This book is a must-read. A friend told me about this book and sent me a few pictures of paragraphs. I was hooked on it from there. I ordered it and read the whole book. There is so much to learn about control and how it directs our lives. I feel if we just took the time to take a minute to understand control then our lives truly would change for the better. We think we have control which makes our lives so much harder than it has to be. I highly recommend reading this and sharing it with everyone you know.

    This book is for everyone
I have been following Sharon Hodde Miller’s social media account for awhile before reading one of her other books, Free of Me. That book completely transformed how I approached relationships with others and helped me more fully embrace my identity in my faith. When I saw her posts about this book, this topic in particular, I couldn’t wait to get reading. It has been such an eye opening experience. All the issues she identifies are relevant and relatable to our every day lives. The one thing that has stuck with me, almost more than anything else, is how she identifies that when we attempt to control others, it’s the innocent that pay the consequence. That has caused me to shift my approach to my marriage, parenting and all my other relationships. We need more voices like Sharon Hodde Miller’s speaking truth and wisdom into our lives with gentleness and grace.

This is a timely book in this season of great uncertainty, when anxiety rates are continuing to rise. Sharon Hodde Miller explores the link between our craving for power and control, )beginning in the garden of Eden), and the dissatisfaction and anxiety it brings. This book offers Godly wisdom and insight focussing on God’s sovereignty and the power He has given us to influence ourselves and our lives
