I will never forget thy precepts; for with them thou hast caused me to live. (Psalm 119:93)
There is no situation in life for which you cannot find some word of consolation in Scripture. If you are in affliction, if you are in adversity and trial, there is a promise for you. In joy and sorrow, in health and in sickness, in poverty and in riches, in every condition of life, God has a promise stored up in His Word for you.
This classic book by Dwight L. Moody brings to light the necessity of studying the Scriptures, presents methods which help stimulate excitement for the Scriptures, and offers tools to help you comprehend the difficult passages in the Scriptures. To live a victorious Christian life, you must read and understand what God is saying to you. Moody is a master of using stories to illustrate what he is saying, and you will be both inspired and convicted to pursue truth from the pages of God’s Word.

Full of good advice and helpful suggestions
Dwight Moody (1837-1899) was an evangelist, publisher, educator, writer, church founder, and a number of other things. He founded the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Moody Press, and the Northfield and Mount Hermon schools in Massachusetts. He became an evangelist when he visited Britain in 1872, and his meetings were often attended by thousands of people. One notable event at the Royal Botanic Gardens drew a crowd of between 15,000 and 30,000 people.Moody wrote about prayer, the 10 commandments and other Bible topics. His sermons were collected and published. And he wrote a book entitled “How to Study the Bible,” recently updated and republished by Aneko Press. It says some for the man’s simple and basic approach to Bible study that what he recommends is as current today as it was more than a century ago.He begins the book with several chapters that essentially answer the question “Why?” – why study the Bible at all? His answers are straightforward: there is no true life without the Bible; the word of Word – all of it – is true; the Old Testament is important and shouldn’t be neglected in favor of only the New Testament; God’s word is accurate and endures.Moody suggests a wide array of ways to study the Bible, starting with the “scopes” approach – the telescope approach for understanding big themes and the big picture and the microscope approach for studying words, characters, places, and events. He discusses ways to remember what’s read and studied; studying types, characters, and names; and doing individual word studies. And he also recommends never buying a Bible you’re not willing to mark up and make notes in, and even had suggestions for underlining and marking. And then he explains how all of this study is useless unless it’s applied and used to further God’s kingdom. He completes his book with a summary of suggestions, 15 short statements that cover the book’s theme and reach. (He even includes his recommendations for how many services a church should conduct each Sunday – two on Sunday morning (one for worship and one for teaching) and one on Sunday night for preaching the gospel.“The more you love the Scriptures,” Moody writes, “the stronger your faith will be. There is little backsliding when people love the Scriptures.”“How to Study the Bible” is a book chock full of good advice and helpful suggestions.

Informative
If you’re looking for a book that gives you 1,2 3 a,b,c then you’ll be disappointed. This book gives you a plethora of ideas on how to make the most of Bible study that fits you, your study style. Whether you have a need to go in order, or need things mixed up a bit, or you’re a topical soul and want to learn one topic at a time or more advanced and want to flex your concordance skills and study by words or word phrases. Whatever your study style, it has a suggestion to make drawing closer to God while writing His Word in the tablet of your heart easier and more powerful than ever before. I found it both informative and a few different ways to rejuvenate my study time and make it as fresh as when the gospel was new to me.

What Passion !
It is a short book you can read in an hour but take a lifetime to master. Moody is, of course, a legend and now I begin to see why. This book was written for every man but would be a blessing to the most experienced preacher.

Good read & Listen
Chocked full of “why didn’t I think of that” suggestions for understanding what you’re reading and ways to remember what you read. Everything I’ve read from Moody was worthwhile. Only distraction was hearing one version and reading an updated one but did not ruin the worth if the read.

How Christians can use the Bible to better understand and relate to God.
Mr. Moody felt that when we read the Bible, God is talking to us. Thus, he states the importance of studying the Bible. Mr. Moody has specific suggestions for the study of the Bible, and the following are some examples. He describes telescopic and microscopic methods of studying the Bible. He encourages younger Christians to spend time with mature Christians who can teach what they have learned about the Bible. He suggests making notes and underlining passages in the Bible. He suggests that Christians carry their Bible in everyday activities and spend at least 15 minutes a day in Bible study and meditation. Mr. Moody says it is absurd for people to believe in the New Testament, but not in the Old Testament. As proof, he cites the New Testament figures such as Christ and Paul who quote dozens of passages from the Old Testament. All of these suggestions for Bible study are from an evangelist whose knowledge of the Bible is remarkable.

I am a Christian myself, but I consider myself more of an agnostic which some “real” Christians might already consider a sin for itself. In general I enjoy reading about Theology of various kinds, be it catholic, evangelical, orthodox, muslimic, jewish, buddhist, hinduism etc. I find studying Theology interesting as it kind of explains the development of history, the body of our morale system, the law and therefor how our civilization came to be and how and why we treat and interact with each other the way we do. I was expecting some sort of book which critically studies the underlying elements of the Bible, its philosophy and a discussion of broader sense. But the book is a typical cliche preacher telling you that you must trust Gods Word alone, that everything God says is the truth, and that you should spread the message to your fellow Christians and be a “good” Christian. Nothing special here but the usual one dimensional preaching. Then again I blame myself expecting a more challenging book for its price.
