Her work has been described as “breathtaking” by the Chicago Tribune. Now Jan Richardson returns with a new collection of blessings that go deeper still into what she has become known for: blessings that do not shy away from our human experience but enter into the full range of it.
With poetic honesty, How the Stars Get in Your Bones turns toward the hard things that each of us knows: the grief, loss, fear, and weariness that we live with. In her distinctive style, Richardson invites us to perceive what makes its home here, too: the joy, solace, grace, and, most of all, the love that moves through it all, illuminating and transforming what seems most hidden or hopeless.
“A blessing has the ability to enter into our pain,” Richardson writes in the opening pages, “not to dismiss or gloss over it but to name it, and to name also the love that connects us and holds us: the love that is continually working for our wholeheartedness.”
These blessings welcome us wherever we are, offer us a space of healing for as long as we need, and call forth our courage, that our broken heart might become a path back into the world.
To keep turning your heart
toward this unendurable earth,
knowing your heart will break
but turning it still.
I tell you,
this is how the stars
get in your bones.
—From the blessing “How the Stars Get in Your Bones”
Born of Richardson’s deep knowing of grief and love, these blessings are a luminous gift to savor and to share.

Kayla Oliver –
Contemplative poems for the life of faith.
I am actually obsessed with all of Jan Richardson’s books – as in I haunt the used bookstore to find copies of older works of hers. This new volume of poems does not disappoint. Jan Richardson’s writing is moving and contemplative – these poems are no exception. Each one stands alone, and yet taken together this book is a journey through awareness of hope, the hard work of healing, and the invitation to keep on pursuing wholeness. Some short poems, some long – all equally impactful. Highly recommend.

Beautiful blessings for personal or group use
First of all, Jan Richardson is a treasure. Her poetry and art have been life-giving to me personally, and I have also used them for small groups and in worship settings. While this book is a little different in format, being more directly about blessings, it is consistent with her excellent work.

Easy to love poetry with a message
you do not have to be a poetry lover to enjoy this author. Her work comes from a special place inside her heart and being based on life experience, I’m bettin’. I just love the internal message in each poem that I still must work to discover but it’s not hard work AT ALL! Enjoyable.

Bought on a whim
Bought this on a whim. Blessings from a Methodist. I read several of them and have enjoyed them so far and felt the person had a clear picture of reality. No regrets buying it.

I tell you, this blazing in you……comes from the helpless place in youthat, despite all, cannot help but hope, the part of you that does not knowhow not to keep turningtoward this world…I tell you, this is how the starsget in your bones. This new book of blessings from Jan Richardson is a balm, both in the darkness and the light, both personal and universal, intimate and expansive. A book for times of despair and of hope. I know that I will return to it often.
