Lysa TerKeurst’s latest book is a beautifully crafted prayer companion called Come Close to Jesus: What to Pray When You Need the Lord to Still Your Thoughts, Calm Your Heart, and Guide Your Way. I bought a like-new copy on eBay, and I’m so glad I did. I’ve included photos so you can see what a great gift this would make for Mother’s Day, graduation day, or a birthday. There is a dedicated page for writing both the recipient’s and the giver’s names.Beautiful artwork in soothing cool-toned shades—reds, greens, blues, and violets—adorns each page. Today I discovered the book includes a golden ribbon bookmark, which helps me easily pick up where I left off. Using this book has brought me comfort during stressful moments, and I appreciate how each prayer guides me gently back to peace.Lysa begins by telling readers how to use this prayer guide. She addresses common distractions that can arise during our conversations with God. Worries, stress, frustration, fears, and mental clutter and chaos will tempt us to process our struggles alone, relying only on our own wisdom. Jesus invites us to “come close” and share what’s truly on our hearts. He knows our burdens and is ready to help.Throughout this guide, Lysa shares prayer items that may have come from her own journal. Her words, along with Scripture passages, will give you immeasurable comfort. None of us is immune to life’s storms, and if you know Lysa, you know God has seen her through many. You can trust this sister in Christ. She’s a veteran. Each chapter ends with a simple, heartfelt prayer that welcomes you to pray as well and to bring your worries to Jesus. Each element is crafted to help you refocus your mind, foster a sense of peace, and experience deep moments of connection to Father God. Among the 50 chapters, Lysa tucks personal letters within the pages.I like that Lysa’s first topic is based on Matthew 5:8 – “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” – a fitting verse for this book, in that she wants us to see God moving in our lives and in our prayer times. Lysa said she began praying this verse because she didn’t want life to pull her focus away from what He is doing in her life. Everything happens for a reason; nothing that happens is because of good or bad luck, or chance; and nothing is a coincidence. God numbers our days, He is in control, and He has a good and perfect plan for each one of His children.Prayers for godly wisdom and for help in trusting and obeying God are included in this book, as well as prayers for navigating friendships, forgiving others, and asking for forgiveness for sins and failures. Lysa has several passages on ways to ask God for strength for each day’s divine assignments.Finally, Lysa tackles our “stinkin’ thinkin’” and has prayers on how to ask God to align our thoughts with His own. She reflects on times when she has judged others, as well as times when she has allowed her emotions, fears, doubts, and anxiety to sway her or put obstacles in her path. Lysa then moves into Scriptural prayers and how Jesus modeled effective prayer to Father God.A bit of a PSA now—when I requested an advanced review copy of this book, I was disappointed to find that the publisher did not include a Kindle version. I rely on adjustable font sizes for comfortable reading, so not having a Kindle version made it difficult for me to see the fine print on the electronic book. I now know to check the available formats before requesting a book, so I don’t make the mistake again. I did try using the Netgalley reader, but it wouldn’t let me increase the print size enough for my poor eyes.I received approval just as Lysa published the book at the end of March, and I thought I’d request a Kindle version through my library. Sadly, weeks went by without any progress on the purchase. But I love Lysa’s writing voice. I always feel like she is speaking directly to my heart in every work, which is why I decided to purchase the hardback copy through a seller on eBay.I didn’t expect the joy I felt when I opened the package and saw Come Close to Jesus. It’s just so pretty! I like that it is a compact size, but not too small. The pages feel like light cardstock, and the chapters are short with a fitting prayer that sounds like something I would pray. No added flourishes and elaborate wording. The prayers don’t sound like a medieval or Victorian minister wrote them. I’ve been reading a passage each night, and it’s been a calm, soothing, sometimes emotional in a good way end to my day.

There are no coincidences with God he knows exactly what you need. This was a quote. I took from the authors forward and it stands so true. This guided prayer book is so timely and so perfect. I love how everything is broken up. Lisa takes the time to really open up and let the Holy Spirit reveal exactly where she was at when she sat and wrote out these prayers and often times while reading this And lamented with those prayers, I felt them because of the way that I often feel unsure, unworthy or distracted to take the time to pray to God about the challenges that I’m currently facing .This book is extremely helpful and heartfelt. It feels like you’re sitting at a kitchen table or coffee table, talking with a girlfriend and you’re bearing your heart with one another and encouraging one another with heart felt prayers.Thi books is anointed by Holy Spirit you can just feel through the words. The prayers are very intimate and timely. I also really appreciate that not only does she have a scripture basis for each prayer And a little insight is why she prayed it, but also gives you words a guideline in which you can pray and not only pray, but there’s a small little prayer in actionAfterwards.a simple step to take as the word says, a little action and movement to activate your faith.I have been going through a rough time with my health and was starting to feel a bit discouraged when this book came along at Hist the right moment. It gave words to the feelings that I couldn’t express and has helped me reconnect to God in a intimate way.I can see how this can be helpful for anyone whether they are a new or seasoned believers to learn nd to practice talking to our Heavenly Father in a way that’s not so formal but from the heart.I’m so grateful to have come across this book it will make a great gift or personal devotional for anyone . The book binding is great quality heavy weighted pages. Hardback with a light lavender bookmark. And the reading itself feels personal as well as relatable. I highly recommend buying this for yourself and those you love.
